Mini Laptops at Northcliffe School
Dated: 09/06/2009
Year 8 pupils are enjoying using mini Laptops provided by the CLC to enhance their learning of French. The current topic is Food, and the aim is for pupils to become familiar with high frequency items of food, as well as learning the grammatical rule about "the". During their lesson an Apprentice style theme was used to get students working in teams to complete a set of tasks as quickly as possible. A presentation then had to be written up of the work that had been completed usng the Latops. Pupils in one particular task used the Lptops to access the website www.voki.com to create a personalised speaking avatar in French which gave opinions about food once typed in by the pupils. This is an excellent website which allows pupils to bring characters to life and to reinforce listening skills and to practice pronunciation in the target language.
Their teacher, Mrs Carine Seimandi, believes the Laptops have been very successful for a variety of classes and pupils. She quotes:
"They have been a great incentive for lower achievers who have enjoyed using the laptops to prepare for their writing tests".
"Higher achievers have benefited from using foreign websites and online dictionaries to produce more creative presentations, including sound files and pictures".
"They are a great tool for differentation as they can be used whenever a student is ahead of the rest of the class and needs to research a specific area in more detail".
